How Search Engines Operate

Search engines have a short list of critical operations that allows them to provide relevant web results when searchers use their system to find information.

Crawling the Web
Search engines run automated programs, called “bots” or “spiders”, that use the hyperlink structure of the web to “crawl” the pages and documents that make up the World Wide Web. Estimates are that of the approximately 20 billion existing pages, search engines have crawled between 8 and 10 billion.
Indexing Documents
Once a page has been crawled, its contents can be “indexed” – stored in a giant database of documents that makes up a search engine’s “index”. This index needs to be tightly managed so that requests which must search and sort billions of documents can be completed in fractions of a second.
Processing Queries

When a request for information comes into the search engine (hundreds of millions do each day), the engine retrieves from its index all the document that match the query. A match is determined if the terms or phrase is found on the page in the manner specified by the user. For example, a search for car and driver magazine at Google returns 8.25 million results, but a search for the same phrase in quotes (“car and driver magazine”) returns only 166 thousand results. In the first system, commonly called “Findall” mode, Google returned all documents which had the terms “car”, “driver”, and “magazine” (they ignore the term “and” because it’s not useful to narrowing the results), while in the second search, only those pages with the exact phrase “car and driver magazine” were returned. Other advanced operators (Google has a list of 11) can change which results a search engine will consider a match for a given query.

Ranking Results
Once the search engine has determined which results are a match for the query, the engine’s algorithm (a mathematical equation commonly used for sorting) runs calculations on each of the results to determine which is most relevant to the given query. They sort these on the results pages in order from most relevant to least so that users can make a choice about which to select.
Although a search engine’s operations are not particularly lengthy, systems like Google, Yahoo!, AskJeeves, and MSN are among the most complex, processing-intensive computers in the world, managing millions of calculations each second and funneling demands for information to an enormous group of users.

Beginner’s Guide – What is SEO?

SEO is the active practice of optimizing a web site by improving internal and external aspects in order to increase the traffic the site receives from search engines. Firms that practice SEO can vary; some have a highly specialized focus, while others take a more broad and general approach. Optimizing a web site for search engines can require looking at so many unique elements that many practitioners of SEO (SEOs) consider themselves to be in the broad field of website optimization (since so many of those elements intertwine).

This guide is designed to describe all areas of SEO – from discovery of the terms and phrases that will generate traffic, to making a site search engine friendly, to building the links and marketing the unique value of the site/organization’s offerings.

Why does my company/organization/website need SEO?

The majority of web traffic is driven by the major commercial search engines – Yahoo!, MSN, Google & AskJeeves (although AOL gets nearly 10% of searches, their engine is powered by Google’s results). If your site cannot be found by search engines or your content cannot be put into their databases, you miss out on the incredible opportunities available to websites provided via search – people who want what you have visiting your site. Whether your site provides content, services, products, or information, search engines are a primary method of navigation for almost all Internet users.

Search queries, the words that users type into the search box which contain terms and phrases best suited to your site, carry extraordinary value. Experience has shown that search engine traffic can make (or break) an organization’s success. Targeted visitors to a website can provide publicity, revenue, and exposure like no other. Investing in SEO, whether through time or finances, can have an exceptional rate of return.

Why can’t the search engines figure out my site without SEO help?
Search engines are always working towards improving their technology to crawl the web more deeply and return increasingly relevant results to users. However, there is and will always be a limit to how search engines can operate. Whereas the right moves can net you thousands of visitors and attention, the wrong moves can hide or bury your site deep in the search results where visibility is minimal. In addition to making content available to search engines, SEO can also help boost rankings so that content that has been found will be placed where searchers will more readily see it. The online environment is becoming increasingly competitive, and those companies who perform SEO will have a decided advantage in visitors and customers.

“A sentence should contain no unnecessary words, a paragraph no unnecessary sentences, for the same reason that a drawing should have no unnecessary lines and a machine no unnecessary parts.”

Business Process Outsourcing

Outsourcing is the delegation of tasks or jobs from internal production to an external entity (such as a subcontractor). Most recently, it has come to mean the elimination of native staff to staff overseas, where salaries are markedly lower The concept started with Ross Perot when he founded Electronic Data Systems in 1962

Offshore outsourcing more and more takes the shape of Business Process Outsourcing, where whole business processes (such as support and development) are outsourced. The client is usually free to choose who provides the outsourced business processes, while stock markets press the company to do more for less. This requires that managers search out the cheapest sources they can find. In countries like India and China (primarily Bangalore in India), companies like IBM, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, and Novell choose to get BPO business services from sub-contractors in these countries or move many development and support jobs there. Smaller businesses can also take advantage of freelancing on the Internet to get smaller projects done by offshore developers at minimum cost.

In the corporate environment, the term “outsourcing” often refers to a particular type of outsourcing, business process outsourcing (BPO). BPO occurs when an organization turns over the management of a particular business process (such as accounting or payroll) to a third party that specializes in that process. The underlying theory is that the BPO firm can complete the process more efficiently, leaving the original firm free to concentrate on its core competency.

HR Processing Solutions

Finance and Administration Solutions

Procurement Solutions

Customer Services

Telemarketing Services

IT Help Desk Services

Technical Support Services

Knowledge Services

Insurance Processing

Mortgage Processing

Through the right mix of business process improvement, labor arbitrage and technology enhancements, BPO is aimed at reducing cost, increasing service levels and thus improving the enterprise value of the business processes. Blending qualified workforce with and faster adoption of well-defined business processes leads to higher productivity gains without compromising on quality.

Easy Steps to Get a Domain Name and Hosting Account

You may be thinking of starting to build a presence on the internet, so where do you start? It can be intimidating but if you are seriously considering either selling your own product or more likely acting as an affiliate for someone else then you do need to think about the long term. You can in the short term act as an affiliate without having a website or blog of your own but if you are serious about making money, you need a domain name and a hosting account as a minimum.Once you have these, you can move onto setting up a website or blog and driving traffic to it to make sales

Here are the steps.
I have found that it is cheaper to have the hosting account separate from the hosting account. Domain names are cheaper direct from a domain name company than buying them through a hosting company. If you have no domain names at all, then try and get your own name first. It will be easier to add domains onto your own name at a later stage because it will be easy to remember! Alternatively think of the product you might be wanting to promote and get a domain name that has some relevance to it. If you get your domain names through Godaddy, or something similar, you will pay a small amount for the name. You will need to register an account with your card details etc. Its pretty straightforward. Do that and then follow the easy steps to see if a domain name of your choice is available and purchase it.If you see one that you like, get it! If you leave it, it is likely to disappear. There are domain names being registered all the time. Once you have bought the name you will get an email from the domain company which you need to keep safe. They cost around $9 or $10.

I would recommend that you open a folder for your emails from your hosting company/domain name company. You will at various stages need the nameservers, passwords etc. If you highlight the email title in your inbox and right click on your mouse you will see “copy to folder”.Go into that and click on new folder, name it and save the email into it. You might also want to copy the contents of the email into a word document and keep it separate that way as well.

Log onto the hosting company of your choice. I use Hostgator. You need a hosting company that gives you unlimited domains and unlimited emails. It is called babycroc on hostgator. Its not the basic package but one up. Have a look at that or Kiosk or one of the many others around and choose which one you feel comfortable with. They are pretty easy to get started with, just follow the instructions. There is usually a small monthly fee for a hosting account

You do need to register with a new domain on the hosting account unless as I have recommended, you have already got one, in which case you need to tick the second box which talks about updating nameservers only (more about that in a minute) then follow the instructions through. Once you have finished registering you will get a welcome email which will amongst other things give you the nameservers details. Keep this in a safe place.

Once you have the domain name and hosting account set up you need to go into the manage part of your domain account, click on manage domains, look in the toolbar for nameservers, click on that, then click on custom nameservers. At this stage you will see there are 2 already completed (these are the domain companies own and you need ot redirect them,) take those out(you might feel safer copying and saving them somewhere first…just in case.) Then if you go back to your hosting account emails you will see that they have given you details for the nameservers, type them in the domain account then click save or OK. The nameservers are usually some numbers and the hosting company name. They will be easily identifIable in the welcome email.

You are now redirecting the domain to your hosting account. It takes a few hours for it to redirect so they advise although I have found it is pretty immediate.

Then you need to add it as a domain name in your hosting account. There is something called contol panel which is the bit that controls everything. You will have been given the details of how to get onto it probably in that first email from the hosting company. Go in there, click on add domains (it will be called something like that),then “add on domain feature,” click on “add on domain maintenance”. You will need to think of some passwords at this stage and write them down somewhere so you have them. The host name is yourdomain.com,the password is the one you were given originally by the hosting company ,click on add on,give your domain your own password (save it somewhere else so you don’t forget it) and hit save.

Nasscom to focus on BPO industry

The BPO sector is looking good. The $8.3 billion domestic BPO sector grew at a compound annual growth rate of 32 per cent during 2006-07. This has forced Nasscom to increase its concentration on the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, considering its prospects for further growth.

The recently appointed chairman of Nasscom, Lakshmi Narayanan, vice-chairman, Cognizent, commented on the side, during the graduation ceremony at S P Jain College of Management, “all along, we were concentrating on the IT sector, since BPO was still a small industry. But with a newer executive council that has more membership from the BPO industry, clearly the emphasis will be on BPO as well.” He added, “BPO industry had been quick to realign its business strategy in order to retain growth. The industry is also realigning and transforming and moving away from activities that are not going to be productive or give high margins and move to better value added segments.”

Mr. Narayanan further stressed, as for the talent shortage, he believes that the three-pronged approach that Nasscom has started will carry on. The first among the three is to encourage creative collaboration between the academic institutes within the industry so that the relevant curriculum is incorporated in the courses. Second, is to continue with the initiative of finishing schools and create a new eco-system and finally to urge the government to deregulate educational institutes. This according to him is the step in the right direction.

“Security will be a prime focus. Apart from educating the organisation on the need to have global standards, we plan to create some institutional infrastructure or a self regulatory body in order to make sure that the issue remains on the agenda for a longer time,” said Narayanan. He also pointed out that his present concern, is to get sufficient skilled people to meet the demand of the fast growing industry both for the IT and BPO sectors, and providing innovating and secure environment in the functioning of both

Oh! BPO

——————————————————————————————————————-
If we assume that each one of these people support a family of 2, what it means is that for every BPO job created in the country, there are 8 lives nurtured and fed across the country. This would translate to over 4.8 Mn people gaining from the benefits of the Indian BPO industry. That is nothing short of a revolution – a fact that the industry needs to be proud of.
——————————————————————————————————————-
Expanding this logic if the industry achieves a size where it employs 2.5 Mn people (from the global available BPO strength of 30 Mn) then the industry would support and feed over 20 Mn people. Now that’s the population of Australia.
——————————————————————————————————————-
The head of sourcing has one of the toughest jobs in the industry. Hiring thousands of people month after month is mind-boggling. To this when you add the issues of assessment, medical and back ground checks, document filing, channel management and it can make the most stable of people get tipsy. Most people burnout in the function after 18 – 24 months.
——————————————————————————————————————-
From an execution and operation angle, the TL is the core for a successful running of a BPO. He has the maximum span of control and the largest set of deliverables. No wonder that in most call centres the TL is respected and feared – even more than the BU head and the CEO.

Globally there are over 30 Mn BPO jobs and till date less than 0.6 Mn have landed on the shores of India.
——————————————————————————————————————-
While thousands have been gainfully employed, it is strongly debated if the BPO industry in India is a finishing school or the first step to a well-rounded career. Is it an easy entry job with good starting salary and perks, or is it just a stepping-stone? Are companies doing enough to create a long-term career for a fresher joining the BPO industry? Do we need engineers and highly qualified graduates working as customer support executives? Are we building a generation of youth who may not be able to scale their career beyond ten years? What would be the impact of a slowdown in the industry to these people?
——————————————————————————————————————-
What is the real cause of Attrition? Are there genuine efforts to tackle this are we bogged down analyzing too many data points. Is there paralysis from analysis?
——————————————————————————————————————-
India has an enrolment of nearly 10 Mn graduates spread across 341 universities and 16,000 colleges. This machinery produces over 441,000 technical graduates every year. However industry is able to employ less than 15 % of the non-tech graduates and 20 – 25 % of the tech graduates. This creates a huge problem of educated but unemployed.

——————————————————————————————————————-
Another interesting trend in the comparison between the IT and BPO players is that the top 5 players in the IT Industry control greater than 80 % of the IT market, however, the top 5 in BPO control less than 25 % of the BPO market. This trend is expected to change in the next five years and follow the IT industry pattern. A strengthening rupee, rapid cost escalation will result in best of breed with deep pockets surviving and thriving.
——————————————————————————————————————-
For every job in the IT industry the surround effect job multiplier is 2.4 +. For the BPO industry this would be 4 +. What this means is that for every person employed in the BPO industry there are 4 additional jobs created outside. These include people employed in various activities like – office boys, drivers, security staff, training services, recruitment consultants, real estate agents, transportation companies, hotels, PC support companies…the list can go on.

——————————————————————————————————————-
Does higher salary reduce attrition? Logic would tend to say yes – but reality is very different. We have seen companies, which pay 18,000 – 20,000 Rs as starting salaries, which is 30 – 40 % higher than the industry average, but they have attrition as high as 100 %.
——————————————————————————————————————-
The Indian railways operate at attrition lesser than 15 %. They attract good talent and have exams, which people need to pass. Same is the case with any large government establishment. What does the Indian railways have that a BPO does not ? The job of a typist , teller , clerk … over the years has been and continues to be monotonous and boring. Yet we never heard of counselling and help for these people over the centuries. Why then the sudden demand for doing things differently for BPO employees. Is it the age , time or is there a expectation mismatch that has been set.

——————————————————————————————————————-
Across the world, Indian BPO’s have the toughest performance management standards and this adds to the pressure.
——————————————————————————————————————-
An 85 % utilization to a layman looks achievable, but what this means is that a person needs to be on a phone for 51 out of 60 minutes in a hour and to do that for 8 hrs. i.e. 408 minutes out of 480 minutes. This is humanly impossible.
——————————————————————————————————————-
Attrition is like rust. Let’s take an example of a company with 15,000 people and an attrition of 100 %. Calculations show that the cost of attrition equals the profit of the company.
——————————————————————————————————————-
People still leave because of the following three reasons:

The way the organization and boss treats you Career growth options and Salary. People do not leave because the cafeteria food was bad or the car did not pick you up on time.”

Most companies confuse employee Branding with Fun and Parties – in a high pressure work environment Fun is a necessity – but that’s just one small element of Employee Branding
——————————————————————————————————————-
What are BPO companies doing to sell themselves as dream destinations. BPO’s are probably the only companies that can offer you 50 different roles during a 10 year career – it pays well – gives you rapid growth and learning – yet it is not marketed as a dream job.
——————————————————————————————————————-
The core value for Brand India in IT – BPO is low cost. That’s a good entry strategy – but if you are the largest in the world that strategy has to change. Realization / associate and rate / hr in the Indian BPO industry at 10 – 18 $ is clearly the lowest in the world. While the desire for profits are the highest. It is inevitable that Indian BPO’s choke the system to try and squeeze out every drop of efficiency.
——————————————————————————————————————-
Grow Vs Grow healthy is a question many Indian businesses and BPO’s need to ask themselves. And healthy growth is not measured purely by your Revenue, EPS and EBIDTA growth
——————————————————————————————————————-
Its also a time to reflect on the gap between the entry level and the highest level – 1.2 Lacs for entry level and 75 Lacs – 1 Crore for the top band is a variation of 60 X . Internationally it would be 30,000 USD to 300,000 USD – that’s a 10 X gap.
——————————————————————————————————————-
Cost cutting is good – but many managers have become obsessed with demonstrating their value and commitment to the company by being obedient and disciplined in the art of cost cutting which may affect in a negative way.
——————————————————————————————————————-

BPO culture: Good or bad for Indian youth?

Business process outsourcing have fast taken over the Indian youth, which has further led to accumulation of western culture in them. Globalisation has brought this culture in India, but is it cultural genocide or the cultural assimilation?

THE POST 1990’s period in the history of India is not only marked by the changes in its foreign policy by rejecting the old ’Nehruvian Socialism’ and adaptations to neo-liberal development in the form of globalisation, but also in the socio-cultural manifestation of the neo-liberal development.

The advent of the business process outsourcing (BPO) culture in India is considered to a by-product of the liberalisation of the Indian economy. The emergence of the BPOs in India was essentially marked by the four pillars (four Ms) of a successful business, namely Mazdoor (cheap human resources), Mal (raw materials), Money(for high profit of margin) and the availability of Market. To fulfill the needs of BPOs, India was having all these components because as cheap labour force we have the vast youth labour force, as raw materials we have the information technology (internet and computer accompanied with telecommunication skill) and of course burgeoning middle class to spent the money for the gizmos and to act as a market – the potential client and customer.

The BPO, as such, has certainly given the employment opportunity to the huge unemployed, helped in deduction of the gender disparity, increase in the human development index at least to say, India’s international market reputation as fast expanding market (thanks to the service sector), but what the economist have failed to understand is that the accompanied socio-cultural mind set up.

The accompanied socio-cultural mind set up is the non-materialistic aspects of the materialism because of the cultural diffusion between India and the west. The fast and competitiveness BPO has led the unconscious mind of the youth to go for anything available in the market, be it the fast food culture, west dress code, pop music or to say electronic goods in the hands. The saving tendency has declined to so-called emerging middle class. To make this point more clear, how come a clerk could afford to education for its children, housing cost, meet the challenges of unforeseen future merely in Rs 5000-10,000 but the Rs 15,000- 20 ,000 and even more earning BPO employees have to live in the life of credit card? Why can’t they save the money? This is primarily because of the ’floating money culture’, which says, “enjoy the life at its fullest” and so we could see the market, masti, maza and majboori (compulsion) as a life style of the youth.

The other aspect that raises the BPO culture is more upsetting for us. Today the youths unofficially in the age group of 18-26 are hired and fired by the BPOs , this is the age group, which is the backbone of any nation as human resources, but when they get engaged in the said sector, from where we will meet the demand of soldiers, engineers, managers and doctors for our future generation? Are we ready to import them from the African countries?

The question remains pertinent for the policy makers, intellectuals and at most for the civil society, that how are we going to meet the demand of the challenges? Can we bear the pressure of the ’cultural colonisation of the mind’. Remember the ’cultural genocide’ can awake from its ashes but the ’colonisation of mind’ takes more than century to awake and that’s what Indian Independence struggle has taught us in the ’history of India in making’.

Shirady Ghat- HC sends notice to contractors

Following the road in Shirady going bad only in month’s time after it was repaired, the High Court has sent a notice to three contractors who had carried out the repair work from October 2007 to May 30 2008 ( a period of nine months). The court notice has been issued on the basis of the Public Interest Litigation filed by one Sadashiva Rao sometime back.

According to the sources in legal department, the interim application came in the court following complaints from few others which made the High Court to decide on the notice to the contractors. K. Rama Bhat, counsel of the litigant argued that the central government was claiming that the Shirady road has been completely repaired but the roads have become un-motorable again.

It could be recalled that the Shirady ghat roads to a distance of 35 kilometers between Adda Holay to Gundya was kept closed for over nine months in 2007-08 for repairs and relaying. It was opened on May 28 for traffic. The Shirady ghat roads are the lifeline of the Dakshina Kannada district connects Mangalore with Bangalore which are two growth centres of the state. But since 2004 the mining trucks have wreaked havoc. The illegal mining lobby had paid their way to New Mangalore Port and ruining the roads of the state.

Since then the struggle of the people to travel between the two cities has been noticed by the entire world through the various media including print, television and world wide web. According to experts the mining lorries were loading twice their laden capacity which was loosening the road. According to the litigants document presented in the High Court the trucks were loading 45 tonnes where only 16 tonnes were supposed to be loaded. The weight dispensation on the road and distribution of pressure on the road as the trucks moved became exponentially larger than the real time gross weight bearing capacity of the road, which eroded the road faster.

The Contractors who carried out the road repairs have already indicated to the government that they would not be in a position to give guarantee to the roads if the government allows the overloaded trucks to ply on the repaired roads.

In the meanwhile it is now established that the mining lorries were the main culprits in the bad roads scenario. There are politicians in the Karnataka government who own the illegal mines are operating with no scruples to hold them. There are no rules as they own the government the transport department officials have been told not to stop any of the mining trucks passing through the gates and the weigh bridges all along the way have “prescribed” weight certificates for mining trucks says Agni Sridhar who is a group leader of the Ganigarike Rashtrikarana Horata Samithi.

The Samithi which held a press conference answered some of the questions regarding the bad state of Shirady roads. Mr. Sridhar said Shirady was one issue but the larger issues were sprouting out of the enormous money power that has been used by the illegal Mining barons to topple the democratic norms. He alleged that the BJP government was being run by a handful of illegal miners. The Horata Samithi has a large following of thinkers, intellectuals, writers and youth leaders who will whip up a movement against the illegal mining. They will demand immediate nationalization of mining industry.

BPOs may soon join billionaires club

The game is fast changing for the Indian business process outsourcing (BPO) industry as for several players; entry into the billion-dollar club may be round the corner. Given the inorganic opportunities, maturity of outsourcing and an appetite to grow scale rapidly, many BPO players may breach the psychological barrier much faster than IT services companies.

Large players manage to create a big impact on clients and employees and are serious contenders for mega deals, says Tholons CEO Avinash Vashistha

As of now, leading the race to get into the billiondollar league is Genpact, which reported a revenue of $823 million for 2007 with an year-on-year (YoY) growth of 34%. Others in the fray are WNS and Aditya Birla Minacs, who are distinctly behind Genpact but have ambitious plans.

WNS, with revenue of $460 million, has been scouting for inorganic options to fuel growth. Aditya Birla is already looking at $1-billion revenue in the next three years from its current level of $392 million.

Analysts feel that IT services success story is now unfolding in the BPO industry. Once a couple of Indian IT services companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro got into the billion dollar league, they were catapulted into the big stage. It is very commonplace now for the India IT services biggies competing directly against the global giants like IBM, Accenture, HP, in fact, even winning a few deals.

Large Indian IT services players, which roughly took about two decades to cross the $1-billion mark, operated in a different era when they mostly grew organically. Their inorganic growth path came much later unlike the case of the BPO companies, which may have crunched the time to grow big.

Says Ernst & Young partner (business advisory services) Milan Sheth, “The BPO journey in India has been from the early part of this decade coinciding with globalisation.” But all is not rosy for the BPO industry, whose fortunes are linked to an environment where there is serious competition coming from 15 other destinations.

On the other hand, India as a destination enjoyed a virtual dominance in offshoring, Sheth says. Aditya Birla Minacs MD Dev Bhattacharya says achieving this target would give them the status of a world class company and also be a big influence in bagging large deals.

According to a Nasscom-Everest study, the Indian BPO industry was staring at a total export market opportunity of $220-280 billion by 2012 while the domestic segment would provide an additional $15-20 billion.

The study further says that in just over a decade, the industry has grown to reach nearly $11 billion in export revenue employing over 7 lakh. And the next five years could potentially see a five-fold growth.

IT/BPO Industry – Mangalore Emerging Strong Challenger to Bangalore

Bangalore remains India’s undisputed No.1 IT-BPO destination. But within Karnataka, Mangalore is seen to be emerging as a strong alternative. Mysore and Hubli-Dharwad are also found to be attractive locations.

A study done jointly by industry body Nasscom and research firm A T Kearney places these four cities from the state among 50 leading cities from around the country that are attractive or emerging destinations for IT-BPO services.

Mangalore finds its place among 15 cities seen as challengers to the ‘leaders’ that include Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, National Capital Region and Pune. It has been found to have a good knowledge pool, with close to 3,000 engineers graduating every year in the city. Social infrastructure like education and healthcare and its 37% cost advantage over cities like Bangalore are seen to be other advantages.

But “Mangalore needs to be more IT-focussed. The government should increase its visibility as a potential IT/BPO destination,” the report says.

Hubli-Dharwad, Mysore among ‘follower’ cities. The IT/BPO race is hotting up with secondary cities emerging as strong contenders as investment destinations.

A study done jointly by industry body Nasscom and research firm A T Kearney places Mysore and Hubli-Dharwad among 12 ‘follower’ cities. The former is seen to be promoting the IT industry, and it has some 5 engineering colleges that churn out 1,500 engineers every year. The city is seen to have good commercial developments, medical facilities and connectivity to places in the state, and a 32% cost advantage over the ‘leader’ locations. But “the physical and social infrastructure needs to be further developed, and the government needs to increase visibility of the location,” the study says.

Hubli has some 6,000 engineers graduating every year, and another 17,000 graduates that can be used by the BPO sector. It has a 38% cost advantage over ‘leader’ locations and domestic BPO voice operations can utilize both Kannada and Hindi speaking skills out of here. Nasscom says the city now needs to improve connectivity to national and international locations, improve education and medical facilities and develop good commercial space.

Nasscom president Som Mittal said the organization would be taking up the study with the new state government.

There are two main places for hackers to target on your blog: the files and the database. For them to run arbitrary code on your site (instead of just editing your content, which is mostly in the database) they usually have to hack the files.

(As an aside, for database changes, you could look into MySQL binary or master logs, although you usually need full access to your server to look into these. Also, if you have full access you should also look into more intense protection systems as suggested by Donncha.)

A lightweight way to be on the alert of potential hacks is to get notified whenever a file on your site is changed. Every hour, or more or less frequently depending on your needs, you can run a script (via cron or WP-Crontrol) to e-mail yourself a list of all of the files that have been changed since the last check. (If no files have been changed, no e-mail is sent.) If you or someone else that you know was making edits to the files, then you can just continue with your day. However, if unexpected files have been modified, you can investigate further.

A BPO Career in India

Remember the time when you were in school? Your parents / guardian used to have ‘one of those’ chats with you. ‘Beta (child), what do you want to do after you graduate from school?’ What followed was probably a career path discussion. You may have had a crystal clear picture of what you wanted to do or a series of maybes, including things that ranged from a career in ‘computers’ or taking up a cliched profession in engineering or medicine. If your choice was not one of the careers I just mentioned, then you are probably one of those who passed out from a state university and soon realized that the bachelor’s degree you had was quite meaningless and not sufficient to get you what you wanted in life. You may have taken some ‘side-dish’ courses to enhance your chances of landing a good career, maybe in computers or related to some kind of a hobby / interest you may have had at that time. You may even have taken up some kind of a job to kill a lot of the free time that comes with studying in a university, like teaching students or working in a pizza place, to earn some extra bucks.

Most of us want the same things – we want a job that pays well, we want to earn loads of money and we want to settle down in a big city, with a lifestyle that makes a statement to our family and friends. Here is a glimpse into the BPO life, which is one of the most sought after career choices available to us in India today.

What does it take to get a job in a BPO? It is fairly straightforward, actually. If you are talking about a BPO, you are probably not talking about a 9-6 job. You are talking about shifts at work, be it shifts that start in the afternoon that go into the night or shifts that start in the night and take you till morning. Shifts do seem fantastic to begin with, if you are single, that is. You get the feeling of being ‘different’ from the crowd, being the privileged one who gets to be at home during the day and even pursue a day course, if you are the industrious sort, and are out at night. You sleep when people around you work and you work when people around you go to sleep. You can earn a ‘decent’ amount of money, meet other ‘wannabes’ and party hard as the crowd you work with often considers this as a way of life. At times, your day may look up as your supervisor / team leader would be happy with your performance or you may have received appreciation from the customer / client that you deal with. So far, so good!

There is another side of this life that is important for you to know about. The shifts could potentially cut you off from your social group. You may find it tough to keep in touch with your friends / relatives and you may even miss some family functions if you do not get leave when it is needed. If the place you work in is a call center by any chance, you may be required to take up to a 100 calls a day and you may soon start feeling that your ears are ringing. You may become averse to taking calls and you may become one of those people who drop calls, put customers on mute while you tell the person sitting next to you how silly the caller is and as a result, your call quality may drop. This is not good news and it could directly impact your career growth. What you can do, however, if you have had consistent performance and the monotony is getting on to you, is to involve yourself in working with the team leader or the training team and start monitoring calls for your team or even take some sessions off and on. This gives you a good break and creates opportunity for your growth as a Team Leader and if you persist, you could even become a Manager. One thing to keep in mind is, of course, that this, like any other career, comes with its trade-offs. You need to constantly ask yourself the question – Is this what I really want to do? Is this lifestyle making me happy? If it is, you are definitely in the right place. If not, well, what can I say, it’s time to switch!
