Download Indian Rupee Font To Use Indian Rupee Symbol In Your Documents

Uday Kumar(the person on the right side photo) is the designer of Indian Rupee symbol. It’s great to have a unique symbol for Indian currency just like US Dollar, UK Pound, etc. Thanks to Indian Cabinet who quickly reviewed the 1000s of entries submitted for Indian Rupee and selected Uday Kumar’s design as “It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters: a capital ‘R’, and Devnagari ‘Ra’, which represent rupiya, to appeal to international and Indian audiences”

Indian Government is taking appropriate steps to make sure the new symbol will be part of computer character set as well as the keyboards shipped in India. But it’s expected to take around 2 years! That’s a long time, but we have to accept that there are many formalities that needs to be completed before the symbol can used in standard keyboards.

Do I have to wait next two years to type the Indian Rupee symbol in my documents and designs? Not really. You can do it right now.

Download Indian Rupee Font And Use It In Designs & Documents

Designers at Foradian Technologies, a web design solutions company, quickly created an excellent font that allows you to type the new Rupee symbol in documents, designs, etc. Here is a screen grab of the symbol in a sample word document I created while drafting this post. Links to download the font is after the break.

Almost all good news: 100 days of Windows 7

Unlike politicians, operating systems (OS) don’t get a honeymoon with the general public. Windows 7 has been on the market for almost 100 days now, so – as in politics – it’s a good time to review how the software has performed so far. The results are largely positive.

First and foremost, Microsoft has to be pleased with sales, which have been brisk. Just a week after the Windows 7 launch Oct 22, 2009, the sales figures had already bested the company’s expectations. “Compared with the start of Windows Vista, five times as many consumers have opted for the new operating system in the first five days,” Microsoft reported.

Even better: despite millions of new installations, no major problems have been reported. “There have been astonishingly few problems with Windows 7,” says Axel Vahldiek from German computer magazine c’t. He’d know: his magazine fields questions from readers. Unlike the OS’s predecessor, Windows Vista, the questions received by c’t general involve minor issues.

That said, even the little things can rub nerves the wrong way. “The biggest problems are coming from older hardware,” says Axel Vahldiek. If the manufacturer doesn’t produce Windows 7-ready drivers, then the device will either refuse to work under the new OS or offer limited functionality. The difficulties are most prevalent in peripheral devices like scanners with SCSI ports.

The blame shouldn’t necessarily be laid at Microsoft’s door, though. The device makers sometimes make things difficult by design, Vahldiek explains. They might be speculating that those affected by problems will buy new hardware and throw their old devices out if they don’t offer enough functionality. The hardware inside the PC usually works without a problem.

No major security holes have been identified yet. Microsoft clearly learned its lesson from the painful introduction of earlier operating systems. “From a security standpoint, Microsoft’s Windows 7 has made significant progress over its prior versions XP and Vista,” reports the German Federal Agency for Security in Information Technology (BSI). Attacks on the system itself have become so difficult that viruses are instead focusing on vulnerabilities in third-party applications.

The experts at the BSI nevertheless still see some room for improvement: given the strong protection mechanisms in Windows 7, it’s a shame that Microsoft fails to preset all user accounts as “restricted”.

The typical procedure instead requires that an administrator account be set up. This allows potentially vulnerable applications an unnecessarily high level of permissions. “The administrator account that Microsoft has conveniently added for managing user accounts nevertheless fails to represent an effective barrier here.”

The BSI’s grades for Windows 7 are better for the protection of user data using the BitLocker hard drive encryption function. This has been reworked to be significantly more user friendly. Then again, it is also only available in the two most expensive versions of Windows 7: Ultimate and Enterprise.

Because bugs are an inherent part of any software release, especially for software as complicated as modern operating systems, users can expect updates and improvements to start arriving shortly after publication.

In the past, Microsoft has typically rolled up the improvements into multiple Service Packs (SP). No information is available yet on when “SP1″ for Windows 7 can be expected, says Microsoft spokeswoman Irene Nadler.

That’s okay for now, though. Unlike with XP and Vista, users of the new system can also get by just fine with the existing product until SP1 arrives.

20 yr old Indian unveils portable Operating System

The 20-year old engineering student Niket Chandrashekar from New Horizon College in Bangalore, has developed a portable Operating System (OS) that can be stored and operated on any device. This has been developed almost entirely with open source tools and with Wine, which allows any Windows-based applications to run on other operating systems, reports Deccan Herald.
LinuXP, developed on the Linux kernel and tuned up to support Windows XP, Vista and 7, is shown to be useful in performing certain tasks such as recovering lost files, locating and installing drivers for printers and other connected devices. It also lets users carry their work on pen drives/cell phones to be ported and extracted through a laptop and work.
“I was thinking of creating a smaller programme that can work like an OS while studying certain innate limitations of the existing operating systems,” said Chandrashekar. Also, the software developed by Chandrashekar, has a folder locking feature which not only protects the folder but also hides it from view. The student, who released similar software that works with XP some months ago, has plans to put the software online to let everyone use it.
“Since the whole of this software – with whatever work one has done on it – can be saved in portable storage devices without changes to the format or design, you can retrieve them on any laptop or desktop without having to worry about things like formatting,” Chandrashekar said and added, “Also, even while used on someone’s device, you can make sure the data it carries is safe.”
Chandrashekar said there is no licensing or IP concerns in using the software. “It took about seven months for me to develop this software, which can step in and perform the tasks of an OS, in case the system does not have one and contains important files,” he said, while demonstrating the software. He also said that the college management and teachers of his department were helpful in his effort to develop the software.

Google Bids Adieu To Gears, Welcomes HTML 5

A few years back, Google had developed a desktop utility called Gears. This was a part of Google’s effort to prove that Web applications such as Gmail and Google Docs could be as sophisticated as desktop apps. It was essentially a Firefox and Internet Explorer extension that allowed the users to navigate through the compatible websites offline and synchronize when going back online. It offered features like offline caching of emails and drag-and-drop file uploading. Interestingly, a number of these features have been included in HTML5, latest standard programming language that powers the Web. The technology is built into Google’s Chrome browser.

Google is all set to launch the first version of Chrome for the Mac and at the same time they have decided to withdraw the Gears project. According to a Google spokesman,

We are excited that much of the technology in Gears, including offline support and geolocation APIs, are being incorporated into the HTML5 spec as an open standard supported across browsers, and see that as the logical next step for developers looking to include these features in their websites,

Still Google has a lot of ground to cover, as HTML5 is not ready and none of the commercially available browsers support it. In some versions of Firefox and Apple’s Safari, geolocation has already been implemented. This will allow the browsers to access an approximate GPS location and pinpoint your device on a map, especially beneficial for mobile apps.

A big reason for not including Gears in Chrome for Mac in the interim, as we wait for HTML5 to solidify, is a technical hurdle. Gears is not compatible with the newest version of the Mac operating system -Snow Leopard. Google’s shift to focus on HTML5 was driven by change in Snow Leopard. Google next year’s release of Google Chrome OS is expected to support HTML5. At the same time it Google considers the fact that Gears would be incompatible for newer Apple computers, whereas HTML5 will assuredly be ready to go in Mac browsers even before the final draft of the language is complete.

According to the sources, Google would continue to support Gears so that nothing breaks for sites that use it. However, it expects the developers to use HTML5 for these features moving forward as it’s a standards-based approach that will be available across all browsers.

How Facebook gives rise to new words

With the advent of new modes of communication, such as Facebook, language and social interaction have gone through a major change, says an expert.
Recently, the New Oxford American Dictionary picked the Facebook term “unfriend” as 2009 Word of the Year.

Ananda Mitra, professor and chair of the Department of Communication, has now revealed how technology influences language and social interaction.

“We have to remember that the most important technology of communication is indeed language, and it is through the manipulation of the symbols that make up the language of a culture that we define the culture. Thus all elements of a cultural system influence the fundamental technology of language,” Mitra said.

“The tools we use to improve our quality of life, from the rake to clear the fall leaves to the Smartphone to unfriend those we do not want on Facebook, all influence how we make sense of the world around us. As such these tools would necessarily influence language.

“Over the history of human civilization as new tools have been introduced we have had to find ways to name them. The printing “press” borrows the name from the wine “press,” just as the word “eyeglasses” mirrors the material used to make the tool, although very few eyeglasses are now made of glass. We need to label the tools and as such technology influences language and words,” Mitra added.

When asked what was the equivalent to “unfriend” before Facebook, Mitra said: “The idea of unfriend is closest to what my colleague and friend Professor Michael Hyde would call the opposite of acknowledging someone’s existence. Drawing on the work of philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, Professor Hyde urges us to ponder the fundamental question: “Where art thou?” and the responsible answer of “Here I am.” The unfriend option is equivalent to saying, “Here I am NOT!”

“There can not be an offline equivalent to unfriend because the process occurs at a discursive level where it is much easier to say the “NOT” via silence which is much more difficult to do in the offline mode, where the equivalent would have to be an overt act of rejection – someone holding out their hand to shake and you actually not only not shaking it, but pushing it back. Unfriending is a more of a deliberate act than simply ignoring, but it is basically pushing back and “deleting” a relationship via a keystroke. Again, drawing on Professor Hyde’s work and Levinas, it is “social murder.”

Mitra even explained how has “friending” on Facebook has changed society and social interactions.

“The changes have been profound because the process of friending has transcended some of the traditional barriers of interaction. For instance, the notion of geography has been transformed and spatial location is certainly no impediment to maintaining a friendship on Facebook. In fact, that would be considered the strength of Facebook,” Mitra said.

Mitra added: “The length of time that it takes to make and maintain friendships has also changed. With a click of a button one becomes a friend and become privy (usually) to all the details of an individual. Finally, Facebook has offered a voice to many who might not have been able to make friends in the offline setting. These are the ones who were the “uncool” kids in high school. Now with the offline distance in space and time these are the ones who are most in need for the friendship but could also be the ones who are most often unfriended. Our biases can continue on Facebook as they do offline.” (ANI)

India embarks on e-tracking of crime project

The government is interconnecting about 14,000 police stations and 6,000 police offices across the country for an IT-enabled sophisticated tracking system in crime investigation and detection of criminals, parliament was told Tuesday.

The total estimated cost of the nation-wide project, called Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS), is estimated to be Rs.2,000 crore, Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken said in the Lok Sabha.

“The major role in the implementation of the project will be with state governments and the union territory administrations,” Maken said.

He said the role of the central government would be “largely confined to development and management of the Core Application Software and issuing guidelines, review and monitoring of the project implementation”.

He said three states — Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat — have developed “somewhat similar platforms” to automate the processes related to case registration, investigation, arrest and status of court trials.

Google expects new operating system to be running low-cost computers by 2010 holiday season

SAN FRANCISCO — Consumers will have to wait until next year’s holiday shopping season to find out if Google Inc.’s new operating system can deliver on its promise to make low-cost computers run faster.

Google set the late 2010 target date Thursday during its first preview of a much-anticipated operating system that eventually may mount a challenge to Microsoft Corp.’s Windows — the foundation for most personal computers since the 1990s.

The Internet search leader announced plans in July for an operating system named after its Chrome Web browser. At the time, Google said Chrome OS would be ready during the second half of 2010. That left open the possibility that Chrome OS computers could be on sale as early as next summer.

But Google is taking its time so outside programmers can contribute to Chrome OS, which is being developed under an open-source model in which anyone can help with development and share improvements. Google also intends to work closely with computer manufacturers to ensure they meet the Chrome OS’s requirements.

Chrome OS is initially expected to be limited to people looking for inexpensive, lightweight computers designed for Web surfing. None of the so-called “netbooks” running Google’s operating system will have a hard drive, and they will need Internet access to run applications.

That could limit interest among users who need their machines on the go and might find pockets of time without Internet service on planes or trains.

Still, Google views the Chrome OS netbooks as a supplement to fully loaded computers that run applications on a hard drive. Google believes the Chrome OS could get heavy usage, given that most people spend most of their computer time connected to the Internet anyway.

Suggested retail prices for the Chrome OS computers won’t be set until closer to their debut. Google executives, though, indicated the Chrome OS should be in the same $300 to $400 range of other netbooks, even though the company isn’t charging manufacturers to use its system.

The computer manufacturers that have expressed an interest in using the Chrome OS include Acer Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

The Chrome OS also is an important step in Google’s crusade to get people more comfortable with “cloud computing,” the idea of keeping their applications and data on remote computers operated by a third party such as Google.

Underscoring Google’s commitment to cloud computing, the Chrome OS machines won’t even have a hard drive. By leaving out that and other components, Google is promising the Chrome OS machines will seem more like a television than a computer because they will be ready to use within a few seconds of turning on the power button. Even the sleekest of Windows-powered machines typically require 30 seconds to 1 minute before applications can be opened.

Google’s foray into computer operating systems represents one of the most daring challenges yet in its escalating duel with Microsoft.

While Google has been trying to attack Microsoft’s software franchise, Microsoft has been trying to undermine Google’s dominance of the Internet search and advertising market. Neither has made a significant dent so far.

With their low price tags, Chrome OS also could potentially undercut Apple Inc.’s Mac computers. The increasing competition between Google and Apple prompted Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt to resign from Apple’s board just a few weeks after the Chrome OS was announced.

Protect yourself from employment identity theft

Did you know that 15% of identity theft is employment-related fraud? Think about it — businesses have access to a wealth of information that thieves can use to their advantage. Many businesses don’t dispose of this information in a secure manner, so your personal information is there for the taking.

This risk occurs also when you are applying for jobs that turn out to be scams but that ask you for personal information.

TrustedID, a company that delivers proactive identity theft protection solutions, was kind enough to share with me some questions to ask to determine if a job posting is a scam, as well as some steps for protecting yourself against employment-related identity theft.

Questions to ask to determine if a job posting is a scam

  • Is this a legitimate business — do they have a Website, and can I find both a physical address and a business license for them?
  • Are they asking me for any personal information that makes me uncomfortable or seems inappropriate up front?
  • Are they offering to pay me cash or too much money for the job being requested?
  • Are they promising to pay me with cash?

Steps to protect yourself

  • Create a separate e-mail account for your job search and keep your primary email address private.
  • Avoid any company that wants to hire you as a “payment representative” or “account receivable clerk.” This scam indicates that you get to keep a percentage of all checks or money orders you place in a bank account for them. Do not open a bank account for a company. You will be the responsible party should any money laundering occur or if checks bounce.
  • Be wary of Craigslist postings — anyone can post anything they’d like. Use various resources to ensure a company really exists.
Avoid any Website that requires you to “pre-register” with your Social Security Number or driver’s license number. A recent scam asked for new candidates to give them their bank information so they could make sure they could send them their payroll check. These candidates gave them access to their bank account and — surprise — they didn’t put any money in, they took money out. Never provide your bank account details unless you are hired.
  • Use caution when filling out online forms — Online forms are the perfect place for an identity thief to steal your personal information. These forms usually request private information such as your driver’s license number and Social Security Number. If you’re filling out an application online (or even if you’re just sending a resume online), be certain you’re on a legitimate Website and that the site is secure. If you’re not sure, find out if the information can be sent directly to the company.
  • Get your identity protected with TrustedID — the only company that protects your whole identity with a comprehensive, proactive protection. Protection includes fraud alerts to help stop new lines of credit in your name, junk mail reduction, public and private database scanning for misuse of your personal information, and more.

Trick: Restart only Windows, not your Computer

Installed a new software in Windows – need a restart?

Your Windows is acting slow and you want to go for a restart.

So what are you waiting for? just click on the button to restart the machine… err not quite. You needn’t restart your machine to restart your Windows. You heard me right. How on earth is it possible! Well, here lies the difference between a warm boot (for the machine)and a cold boot (for only Windows).

The trick is very simple. Annoyingly so.

Just hold the Shift key and click on Restart. Works for XP, Vista, Windows 7 et al.

Happy?

How to Reduce Boot Time for Windows

I know that Windows runs super slow in some people’s machine. And try as hard as you can but you can seldom find a good reason for the slowing up or a remedy to it. So here is a surprising trick which can improve your Windows booting time. if you uninstall your unused fonts. Believe it or not it happens because it simply frees up a whole lot of memory of Windows when it boots.
Trick
Simply go to Window’s Fonts Folder. Using CTRL key select all fonts that you never/rarely use and just press the DEL key.
Though I don’t like the first method because it deletes all the fonts. Here is a very dumb but effective process to retain the fonts and still delete them from that folder.

Simply stop the loading up of unused fonts at system startup (instead of completely deleting them). For this, just COPY all unused fonts from the Window’s Fonts Folder and PASTE them at any other location on hard drive. Now DELETE all the unused Fonts (those you recently copied to another location) from the Window’s Fonts Folder.
The next time Windows Boots up, it will definitely be faster than previous boots.

Tech experts fail to knock down internet worm

Finally, a worm that could knock down global internet is here. Even tech experts have failed to conquer this deadly worm called Conficker, which has already infected five million computers, and may soon crash the internet in all countries.

So dangerous is the threat, that the world’s largest computer security companies have joined together with governments around the world in an unusual alliance to pool their resources and solve the problem. So much so, that a group (Conficker Working Group) to defeat the worm has also been created.

The worm, which was first detected in November, last year, spreads rapidly to computers through a flaw in the Windows operating system. Infected machines are co-opted into a “botnet” army, which can be controlled and used by the hackers to launch unprecedented cyber attacks.Tech experts fail to knock down internet worm

“The general agreement in the security world is that Conficker is the largest threat that global internet is facing from a cyber crime point of view. It has proven to be extremely resilient. It’s almost impossible to remove,” Rodney Joffe, a Director of the Conficker Working Group, told Sydney Morning Herald. “The best minds in the world have not managed to crack the code behind this yet.”

Microsoft has offered a 250,000 dollars reward for information leading to the identification of the individuals – or rogue governments – behind Conficker. But so far international effort to find a solution has yielded few results.

The creators of the worm can do anything they want with the infected machines including stealing users’ banking details or flooding government servers to knock them offline. The worm has a built-in mechanism to prevent people from scanning their computers with anti-virus software, says Joffe. Unfortunately, even for those who wipe their computers clean and start fresh, if they back up any important data on a portable hard drive, the clean machine is re-infected when the drive is connected to the computer.

The worm also spreads automatically between computers on a network and infects machines without the user having to do anything other than switch their computers on. While majority of the botnets can be destroyed by disabling the server used to issue commands to infected machines, but with Conficker the location of this sever changes every day and state-of-the-art cryptography means it’s almost impossible to crack

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Information Technology industry in India is powering economic growth and boosting export earnings through solutions and services churned out by the knowledge based sector. The IT industry is experiencing steady growth, thanks to increased spends across key markets in the US and Western Europe, and strong growth in emerging markets. Outsourcing continued to be the primary growth engine with global delivery forming an integral part of the strategies adopted by both customers and service providers.

While Indian IT majors have started building notable presence outside the country – through overseas
acquisitions, onshore contract wins and organic growth in other low-cost locations, global players have been ramping up their offshore delivery capabilities, mostly in India.

SOFTWARE

The Software industry is riding the wave of success with aggregate sales increasing by over 40% and net profit margins over 20%. Joining the celebrations is the Hardware sector, posting a healthy growth trend. With massive investments in this domain, the Information Technology sector is continuing its impressive run year after year.

Karnataka’s software industry – the 4th largest Technology Cluster in the World (After Silicon Valley, Boston & London) has shown a steady expansion rate. This sector employs 3,00,000 professionals with exports of over INR 37,600 crores (USD 8.4 billion) during 2005-06 with projections of INR 50,000 crores (USD 10 billion) during the next fiscal.

The Nasscom – McKinsey Report 2005 estimates a 25% year on year growth for this sector in Karnataka, with exports touching INR 75,000 crores (about 18 billion USD) by 2010, employing around 1 million professionals.

HARDWARE
The Hardware sector continues to account for a major share of the domestic IT-ITES spends and is expected to grow at 22% in the current fiscal. Key verticals driving growth include Telecom, BPO, BFSI, Manufacturing and Education.
Computer Hardware and peripherals sector continue to attract huge investments in view of the huge growth potential arising out of lower penetration and increasing IT expenditure. This is reflected by the interest evinced by global majors like Dell, Cisco, APC, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard to set up operations in India.
